The Cleveland Clinic is seeking an experienced government relations professional with significant experience in the healthcare field to serve as its Executive Director of Federal Government Relations (“Executive Director”) who will be based in Washington, D.C. This person will serve as the lead liaison between the Cleveland Clinic and the federal government on legislative, regulatory and administrative matters, interacting closely with Clinic staff.
Responsibilities
The Executive Director will work collaboratively, under Cleveland Clinic’s Chief Government Relations Officer, with Cleveland Clinic’s Government Relations team and with Cleveland Clinic’s staff based in Cleveland to coordinate Clinic interests and activities that require government interaction, to determine its priorities, to help develop strategies for its leadership and to share information on Washington developments.
The Executive Director will be instrumental in developing, implement and directing federal activities in support of the legislative, regulatory and policy priorities of Cleveland Clinic.
The Executive Director will represent Cleveland Clinic both internally and externally on federal matters relating to the Executive branch, Congress, certain regulatory agencies, relevant trade associations and healthcare thought leaders.
The Executive Director will be required to have a deep understanding of the regulatory and legislative environment and will provide (1) strategic input on the policy, procedural and political challenges facing Cleveland Clinic, and (2) analytical insight and analyses of important legislation and regulatory initiatives to guide Cleveland Clinic action.
The Executive Director must be an effective advocate for Cleveland Clinic’s position and actively participate in the healthcare policy arena.
Qualifications
The Executive Director must demonstrate effective advocacy skills, strong interpersonal skills, the ability to develop and maintain good working relationships with Cleveland Clinic leadership and staff, elected officials and their staffs, federal regulatory officials and leaders within organizations actively engaged in the healthcare public policy arena.
A Masters degree in healthcare policy, political science, communications or other relevant advanced degree, such as in law, is required.
A minimum of 8 years of experience in a related position, focused on healthcare policy is desirable.
Thorough knowledge of communications, federal government policy and the legislative process is required.
The Executive Director must relate strongly with Cleveland Clinic’s patient-centered values, possess excellent oral and written communication skills, and have the ability to understand and inform/counsel others about complex policy proposals/regulations.
